As a pain medicine physician with Pain Specialists of Iowa, I serve Des Moines and the surrounding communities in Central Iowa. I am originally from Nebraska and attended medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. After graduating from medical school, I moved to Kansas City, KS for a 1-year internship (internal medicine) at Kansas University Medical Center. Following my internship, I was selected to become a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force where I served as a physician for reconnaissance squadrons. In addition to reconnaissance, I provided medical support for the First Airborne Command and Control Squadron during presidential support missions for President Barack Obama. It was in the Air Force that I was introduced to pain medicine. After completing my service in the Air Force, I began my anesthesiology residency training at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. During my training, I continued to focus on pain medicine. I loved helping patients with chronic pain and received great satisfaction from helping improve my patients’ chronic pain and increase their functionality. Following my anesthesiology training, I continued my education and entered a pain medicine fellowship at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Toledo, OH. Here, I was trained to provide multimodal interventional treatments, medication management, and physical therapy to maximize a patient’s success.

Originally, from the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, I was excited to relocate to the Des Moines area where my wife attended Drake University. I attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where I earned a Bachelors in Science (B.S.) in Molecular and Cellular Biology, a Bachelors of Arts (B.A) in Spanish, as well as a minor in chemistry While enrolled, I was also active in conducting research with honeybees in a university laboratory, coaching a high school basketball team, and volunteering my time at a local hospital. I was then accepted into the Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science for medical school. I earned my Medical Degree (M.D.) in 2011, and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) National Medical Honor Society. While in medical school, I worked at Hospira Pharmaceuticals in their Medical Affairs department, helping assist with medical education for other medical professionals. I was then accepted to Duke University to compete my anesthesiology residency training. Before relocating to Durham, North Carolina, I completed an internal medicine year in medicine at University of Illinois Hospital. During my residency at Duke, I received well-rounded didactic and clinical experience from the esteemed faculty. I was voted as Resident Teaching Scholar in my final year, while remaining active in clinical research during my residency. While a resident, I also instructed ultrasound guided regional anesthesia nerve blocks at numerous regional and national conferences. I chose to stay at Duke University for my pain fellowship, given the complexity and quality of the training. In addition to extensive training in X-ray and ultrasound guided injections, I performed over 70 implants of spinal cord stimulators, cancer pain pumps, and kyphoplasties, which I am excited to bring to our growing practice. I also published numerous publications including papers on ketamine, fibromyalgia, occipital nerve stimulation, and a book chapter on intrathecal pumps while a fellow. I remain active in pain education of medical students, resident physicians, and attending physicians of all specialties in our practice. I am committed and proud to bring my breadth of training in pain medicine to treat all of my diverse patient’s pain conditions, with a goal of improved pain control and functional improvement.

My anesthesiology training was at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, followed by a pain medicine fellowship at Mayo Clinic. As a native Midwesterner, I am thrilled to return to the area after earning my medical degree at Des Moines University in 2010. As part of my pain medicine fellowship, I received training in therapies including joint injections, radiofrequency ablation, spinal cord stimulation, pain pumps, and nerve blocks utilizing both x-ray and ultrasound. I am excited to use these skills to serve patients in the Des Moines area and the surrounding communities. While training at Mayo Clinic, I was fortunate enough to spend 1 month in Scottsdale, Arizona, treating patients who suffered from cancer-related pain. This experience had a profound impact on me as a physician, and I look forward to continuing to work with this patient population in the Des Moines area. When you meet me, I will take a detailed history and discuss your pain and any previous procedures or treatments with you. This allows me to recommend the best possible treatment for your particular condition. If you or a loved one are suffering from pain, you probably already know that there are many ways to treat pain. Having suffered a sports-related back injury during residency, I understand how much pain can take away from everyday life. Therefore, I am committed to finding the treatment that restores quality of life for my patients.
